Georgia is said to be the birthplace of winemaking. The traditional qvevri method, which uses large clay pots buried underground for fermentation, dates back 8,000 years and is still practiced today. Tbilisi, the capital, has embraced this legacy with excellent wine bars that highlight Georgia’s ancient winemaking traditions, indigenous grapes, and small-scale producers. Here are five of the best wine bars in Tbilisi!

Best for a tasting or shopping

8000 Vintages is a wine bar and shop with the country’s most extensive selection of locally bottled wines. Each bottle is chosen by an independent expert committee through blind tastings. This is the place to go in Tbilisi for a quality wine tasting. Sommeliers guide guests through a one-hour tasting in English or Georgian, which includes four types of Georgian wine and a delicious charcuterie board.

Best for dining

Craft Wine Restaurant is one of the best places to eat and drink in Tbilisi. Set inside a historic building that was once home to a prominent French writer, the interior is dimly lit and beautifully decorated – perfect for a date. Craft has an impressive selection of natural Georgian wines, possibly the largest in Tbilisi, and serves excellent food using local ingredients. Don’t miss their lavash, made to order, brushed with oil, and sprinkled with sea salt. I could also live off of their BBQ celery root and mushrooms!

Sulico Wine Bar & Restaurant

Best for outdoor seating

Sulico is a top wine bar for its ambiance, food, and outdoor space. This wine bar has about 130 bottles in stock, mainly of qveri wines from small producers. It’s also a restaurant serving great dishes using local, organic ingredients designed to pair with the wine selection. Sulico’s atmospheric courtyard, filled with hanging lights, plants, and colorful street art, is the perfect place to hang out in nice weather.

Best for live music & events

Wine Not? is a cozy and welcoming wine bar with knowledgeable staff that will gladly help you choose from the extensive selection of wine. The bar regularly hosts live music and events, like stand-up comedy nights and meet-ups for expats, making it a great wine bar for entertainment or solo travelers looking to socialize. You can also do a wine tasting here or buy a bottle to take home.

Best for breakfast ;)

DADI Wine Bar & Shop offers a diverse selection of natural wines made by small producers throughout the country, which are all marked on a giant map on the wall. They open about 30 different bottles of wine a day that you can try by the glass, and you can also do a tasting or buy a bottle to take home here.
