How to Get to Chichicastenango from Antigua

Chicken Bus

The chicken bus is a cheap and authentic local experience. But it’s not a safe or comfortable option for long distances or when traveling with all your belongings. Crime is an issue, driving can be dangerous, the buses are packed, and it’s a bumpy ride. From Antigua, it takes 3 transfers, 4-5 hours, and costs about $5 one-way. You would take a bus from the bus station by Mercado Central to Chimaltenango. From there, you take a bus to Los Encuentros, and from Los Encuentros, a minivan to Chichicastenango. Always confirm the logistics with your hotel beforehand for the most current routes and schedule.

  • U.S. government employees are not allowed to take public transportation in Guatemala, given the “high chance of crime and injury.” While USG policies are extremely risk-averse to protect American officials overseas, this should give you an idea of the risks involved when taking chicken buses.

Shared Shuttle

Shared shuttles are affordable and convenient, but you might wait an hour for the shuttle to arrive, and you’ll be packed in uncomfortably like sardines! Shuttles depart Antigua at 7 AM on Thursday and Sunday. The journey is about 3 hours and costs $20 one-way or $35 roundtrip. The return shuttle leaves at 2 PM.

Private Day Tour

The only private shuttle you can book online is through GuateGo for $190-230 one-way, depending on the number of passengers. At that (crazy) price, it makes more sense to book a private tour instead, which includes roundtrip transportation. You can choose a tour that also visits the ancient Maya city of Iximche.
