How Long to Spend in Trapani
The main thing you should know when trip planning is that Trapani is not really a destination for sightseeing. There aren’t any can’t-miss historic sites, and you can wander around the small historic center and walk along the waterfront in a few hours. Trapani is more about relaxing with sea views and soaking up the local culture while passing a few lovely historic sites along the way. As a tourist, the best things to do are just outside of the city or on the sea, like visiting the medieval town Erice and the picturesque salt flats that produce Italy’s finest salt or cruising around the stunning Aegadian Islands.
I recommend spending 1-2 nights in Trapani
I would stay in Trapani for two full days / two nights if you want to visit Erice, the salt flats, and do a boat tour of the Aegadian Islands. On the first day, you can do a half-day tour to Erice in the morning and visit the salt flats in the afternoon or evening (they’re beautiful at sunset). On the second day, you can do an 8-hour boat tour, exploring the islands’ secluded coves, sea caves, and turquoise waters. That would leave you with a few hours both days to walk around Trapani and enjoy its great restaurants and cuisine.
If you’re short on time, though, or planning to stay on the Aegadian Islands (not just visit on a day trip), then you could definitely get away with only spending one full day and night in Trapani. If you have more than 1-2 nights to spare, I would spend that extra time on the Aegadian Islands, rather than in Trapani.
