Luxury ($$$$)

Four Seasons is the top pick for classic luxury in the Old City. Trust me – I stayed here for a month! Its beaux-arts style hotel in Baku is gorgeous, and the service is the city’s best. The rooms are elegant, bright, and spacious, with views of the Old City or Caspian Sea. The hotel has a top-notch spa and a stunning swimming pool inside an atrium with a vaulted glass ceiling. Four Seasons is popular with visiting foreign dignitaries and Baku’s glitterati. They frequent the hotel for its Italian restaurant, club-style cigar and whiskey lounge, extravagant Sunday brunch, and live music and shisha on the terrace.

JW Marriott Absheron Baku is for those who prefer a sleek, contemporary luxury hotel or business travelers working downtown. This large hotel in the city center has 237 rooms across 21 floors of a high-rise building and numerous snazzy restaurants and bars. Like Four Seasons, the Marriott also has a highly-rated spa, indoor swimming pool, well-equipped fitness center, and an out-of-this-world breakfast buffet that is very hard to resist. I gained at least five pounds when I stayed there!

Upper-End ($$$)

The Merchant is a beautifully designed boutique hotel that blends luxury with traditional Azerbaijani aesthetics. Set inside a restored 19th-century building that once housed the Caspian Shipping Company, it’s ideally located between the Old City and downtown, near Baku’s seaside promenade. Rooms are lavish and opulent in classic Azerbaijani style. The hotel has a restaurant with dishes inspired by the ancient Silk Road, an innovative cocktail bar, an outdoor terrace, and a fantastic breakfast buffet.

Mid-Range ($$)

Home Boutique Hotel offers great value for money in Baku’s Yasamal district north of the Old City. Its rooms are tastefully decorated with balconies and modern amenities. The hotel provides an excellent complimentary breakfast and free parking, and the staff is friendly, hospitable, and available 24/7. While the hotel’s location isn’t ideal – it’s a 35-minute walk to the Old City or Nizami Street – guests overwhelmingly report the hotel is worth it and they’d stay there again, considering how cheap taxis are.

Hostel ($)

Freestyle Hostel Baku is centrally located downtown in the Nasimi district, next to a metro, the bus stop for the airport, and the train station. It provides free bike rentals and the use of washing machines for laundry, a shared kitchen, a 24-hour front desk, and luggage storage. The hostel has private and dorm rooms and is highly rated for hospitality, the central location, and easy access to public transportation.
