Many restaurants in the center of Antigua offer a mix of local and international dishes, catering to tourists, so I was thrilled to find these must-try places for traditional Guatemalan food loved by locals.
Rincón Antigüeño
Ask any local about their favorite place to eat in Antigua, and they’ll probably say Rincón Antigüeño. This is the best place to try traditional Guatemalan food at the most affordable prices in town. Tortillas are made fresh at the entrance and come to the table hot off the comal. One dish to try that’s a highlight is the fire-roasted chicken. There’s usually a line to eat here, but the service is fast, so it moves quickly.
El Viejo Café
El Viejo Café is a restaurant, café, and bakery I highly recommend for breakfast. They have great coffee and a variety of delicious local breakfast dishes. The restaurant has a warm, homey atmosphere, with beautiful wood furnishings and antique decorations – exactly what I was looking for over the holidays!
Dulcería de Doña María Gordillo
Dulcería de Doña María Gordillo has been making traditional Guatemalan sweets since 1872. It’s an iconic, family-run establishment with time-honored recipes and is beautifully decorated with antiques. There’s always a line outside of locals queueing for their fill of coconut confections, candied yams, stuffed figs, and more. The Netflix travel and food show Somebody Feed Phil just filmed there in December 2024!
