Antigua, Guatemala has so many beautiful places to stay that it can be overwhelming to choose between them. These are my picks for the best hotels in Antigua for every budget. All feature the traditional, old-world aesthetics that make colonial Antigua such a charming and unique destination. When considering where to stay in Antigua, note that 22% in taxes (12% VAT + a 10% city tax) is added to the price of all accommodation.

Luxury
Hotel Casa Santo Domingo was built within the 16th-century ruins of the Convent of Santo Domingo, destroyed in the 1773 earthquake. It’s the most well-known hotel in Antigua and a destination in itself for visitors. It has museums, art galleries, top restaurants, a spa, a pool, and chocolate and candle shops.

Posada del Angel is an intimate boutique hotel in a colonial home with seven elegant suites. It’s popular with in-the-know travelers and one of only two luxury hotels in Antigua recommended by the MICHELIN Guide. The hotel has a small pool in its courtyard and a lovely rooftop terrace, among other beautifully decorated spaces. It also offers guests a wonderful free breakfast, unlike many luxury hotels in Antigua.

San Rafael Hotel is a small boutique hotel with seven rooms. It’s steps from the Arco de Santa Catalina, Antigua’s most iconic landmark, though maintains a tranquil, serene ambiance. The hotel, known for its intimate service, has an oasis-like courtyard with fountains and gardens and includes a great breakfast.

Budget
El Mesón de Maria is a traditional, simple hotel that offers great bang for your buck, with rooms for as little as $60/night. Set in a beautiful old colonial home about a block from Parque Central, this medium-sized hotel has 20 charming rooms and a great view from its rooftop terrace. Try to get a room on the second floor or away from the inner courtyard where the free continental breakfast is served.

Hostel
Barbara’s Boutique Hostel is in a colonial-style home. It offers free breakfast, 24-hour reception, organized tours, a kitchen, and a terrace. Dorm beds have a privacy curtain, reading light, personal fan, and plug. Note that towels cost extra and guests must be 18 or older. The hostel also has nice private rooms for over $100/night, bringing together a more diverse range of travelers than usual under one roof.
